Surveyors in ancient Egypt had a simple tool for making near-perfect right triangles: a loop of rope divided by knots into twelve equal sections. When they stretched the rope to make a triangle whose sides were in the ratio 3:4:5, they knew the largest angle was a right angle.
Can you fit the five pieces at bottom into the two smaller squares above the right triangle? Then can you fit the same five pieces into the larger square below the right triangle? If you can do both, what have you done?

Solution:
Areas of the regions: region A = π*32 + 62 = 9π + 36; and region B = π*52 – π*42 + 102 – 82 = 9π + 36. Thus, regions A and B have equal areas.

GAME RULES. Jump over your opponent’s chips to capture all the chips that lie between yours. Players take turns, and when neither player can move the game is over. The side who owns more chips at the end wins.
This internet Reversi game is deceptively simple. However, until I read up a little on Reversi strategy, I found that on the “Normal” difficulty setting I lost to the computer every time!
STRATEGY. There are several important considerations when planning your strategy in Reversi:
Corners. Because they are immune to flipping (no opposite color behind them), corner positions often make good anchors.
Mobility. Think of ways to restrict your opponent options. That’s one way to eventually force them into making a poor move.
Edge Play. Often the edges can anchor flips that affect the entire board. Play edges where the opponent can’t easily respond to limit their moves.
Parity. This means getting the last move in any empty area in the end game. Parity also relates to how edge positions are played and how edges interact.
Endgame Play. The last 20 moves are the end game. These moves are critical and can quickly change a winning Reversi game to a losing game and vice versa.
