The beauty of the butterfly

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.

The beauty of music

It is cruel, you know, that music should be so beautiful. It has the beauty of loneliness and of pain: of strength and freedom. The beauty of disappointment and never-satisfied love. The cruel beauty of nature, and everlasting beauty of monotony.
~ Benjamin Britten

Character vs. Beauty

You may fall in love with the beauty of someone, but remember that finally you have to live with the character, not the beauty.

Girls are like apples on trees

Girls are like apples on trees.  The best ones are at the topi of the tree.  The boys don’t want to reach for the good ones because they are afraid of falling and getting hurt.  Instead, they just get the rotten apples from the ground that aren’t as good, but easy.  So the apples at the top think something is wrong with them, when in reality, they’re amazing.  They just have to wait for the right boy to come along, the one who’s brave enough to climb all the way to the top of the tree.

Janet’s Note:  I don’t entirely agree with everything portrayed in this quote (the “rotten apples” phrase gives me pause), but it’s got some interesting ideas and is, I think, beautifully presented.

How We Are Judged by Our Appearance

Facial appearance translates to judgments of character
Excerpt:  We all know that looks matter. What most of us don’t understand is just how much looks matter, and how difficult it is for us to ignore a person’s appearance when making a social judgment. I’m not talking just about romantic relationships, I’m talking about all our human interactions. And by appearance, I’m not speaking simply of the “beauty,” dimension, but also of many other qualities of one’s appearance.
